The Challenge

Organizations running Salesforce Field Service Lightning (FSL) often struggle with a simple but critical operational question: do we have the right number of technicians in the right places?

Service Territories in FSL track appointments and technician assignments, but out of the box, there is no easy way to visually compare demand (scheduled service appointments in a region) against supply (technicians assigned to that region) on a map.

Dispatchers and operations managers were left cross-referencing reports and spreadsheets to identify understaffed territories, creating a slow and reactive process that made it difficult to proactively reallocate technicians from low-demand to high-demand areas before service levels were impacted.

While Salesforce Maps provides this type of visualization, the additional licensing costs created a barrier for organizations that wanted to validate the concept before committing to a larger investment.

Salesforce Field Service Capacity Visualization

The Approach

IDS Logic was engaged to design and prototype a capacity visualization layer that would give operations leaders an at-a-glance view of technician distribution relative to demand, without requiring a paid mapping add-on.

  • Field Service Foundation:
We stood up a dedicated Salesforce sandbox environment, enabled Field Service Lightning, and configured the core operational data model including Service Territories, Operating Hours, Work Types, Service Resources, and Skills, establishing a clean and realistic baseline to build and test against.
  • Custom Capacity Engine:
We built an Apex service layer that aggregates two key data points per territory and per month: the number of active technicians assigned and the volume of scheduled service appointments. This produces a live demand-to-resource ratio for every territory in the Salesforce org.
  • Geospatial Visualization, Zero License Cost:
Rather than relying on a paid mapping platform, we evaluated cost-effective alternatives and implemented the solution using Leaflet.js with free OpenStreetMap tile data. A custom Lightning Web Component renders an interactive map where each Service Territory appears as a color-coded marker: green for healthy staffing, yellow for moderate strain, and red for territories at risk. Marker size scales according to appointment volume, providing an instant visual overview of capacity requirements.
  • Built for What’s Next:
The architecture was designed with a modular approach. The business logic and data layer remain fully independent from the map rendering layer, allowing future integration with Salesforce Maps, Google Maps, or other mapping providers without major redevelopment as business requirements grow.

The Outcome

  • A working, interactive capacity map delivered as a zero-cost proof of concept with no API billing, licensing fees, or usage limits.
  • A clear visual answer to a question that previously required manual report cross-referencing: where additional technicians are needed each month.
  • A reusable Apex data layer that can integrate with future reporting tools and front-end applications.
  • A validated foundation that enables the client to scale confidently into production while providing a clear upgrade path to enterprise mapping solutions as future requirements evolve.

Why It Matters

This engagement reflects how IDS Logic approaches Field Service projects broadly: starting from the operational question that matters to the business – am I staffed correctly, where it counts – rather than defaulting to the most expensive tool available. By proving the concept first with open-source technology, the client was able to validate real value before making any licensing commitment, de-risking the investment decision entirely.
